I turned the page on my wall calendar this morning. June is here. The first of the month, time to turn the page, start fresh, begin again. I do wish I had a dollar for every time I have felt the need to do just that since 2020. Twenty-seven months, twenty-seven page turns, hoping to notice things anew, yet most often things remained as they were. I think it was George Carlin who said, “I put a dollar in a change machine, nothing changed.”
Anyway, on the calendar, each month the picture is of a different waterfall from around the world. I looked at this month’s and thought at first that it looked a whole lot like the waterfall from last month. But then I saw the difference. This one had a vivid rainbow wrapping itself around the waterfall’s splash. A rainbow!
After the great flood, God sought to show Noah and the rest of what humans were left on earth, a sign. And it was a rainbow. And God said, “This is a sign of the covenant that I make between me and you…and… that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.”
I long for a rainbow now! A rainbow signaling the end of COVID, a rainbow signaling an end to rampant violence and mass shootings, a rainbow overarching racial injustice, ushering in an era of equity and hope, a rainbow over Ukraine bringing peace and restoration. A rainbow!
You might say that’s a lot to ask for. Go ahead say it. But remember Jesus’ words, “Ask and it shall be given to you.” and “With God, all things are possible.”
Pray the rainbow.
