NOTES FROM WEST MOUNTAIN – The Rev. Mark E. Diters
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
20-20 Vision 2020… “saying what one sees.”
Race and Justice…Environment and Justice
20-20 Vision is seeing…by definition, “with acuity, clarity and sharpness…” images at 20 feet.
20 feet is relatively close at hand. So, seeing with 20-20 vision is seeing what is right here, right now, within reach…and even for those whose vision does not meet that standard, correction by glasses, contacts, or surgery can oftentimes bring their vision to 20-20.
So, let’s risk being prophets…let’s together engage in daring to focus so “on the present” that we might have something to say about what is to be.
One aspect of prophesy I am partial to is captured in a simple phrase, “I see and I say”. Prophesy is usually defined as predicting the future. However, a significant player in any prophetic endeavor is often as not, “precisely and accurately describing a moment in time” and by doing so what comes next is almost plain common sense. If one is able to present a real and true snapshot of what is “really going on”; socially, culturally, scientifically, legally, etc. while noting the forces at play as well as the players doing the playing, one can anticipate what might be “about to come about”.
The year 2020 is upon us. It is a presidential election year…house and senate seats will also be up for grabs, and doubtless there will be unforeseen controversies, discoveries and events which may surprise us, confound us or even perhaps offer us joy. In any case, it is a year bound to evoke challenging emotions and responses to whatever comes to pass. These two series are meant to stimulate thought, educate and set a framework for further considerations…including what might be done to effect real and lasting change.
Peace and encouragement into the New Year,
Mark

JANUARY SECOND MILE OFFERING: SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER
The Southern Poverty Law Center is an American nonprofit legal advocacy organization specializing in civil rights and public interest litigation. It is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality. Part of their mission is to monitor hate groups and other extremists throughout the United States and expose their activities to the public, the media, and law enforcement, as well as to help teachers and schools educate children and youth to be active participants in a diverse society.
Start out the new year with a resolution to seek justice by contributing to this formidable organization.

BY TREVOR NOAH
TWO-PART BOOK STUDY
Sundays, January 19th & February 2nd at 11:30 a.m. or
Wednesdays, January 22nd, & 29th at 11:30 a.m.

The first session will be held Sunday, January 19th and Wednesday, January 22nd and the second session will be held January 29th and February 2nd
This book provides a timely and sensitive record of Trevor Noah’s life growing up in South Africa. While it focuses on race and justice in a wholly different country than our own, it offers deep insights into how our nation engages in white supremacy, racism and privilege. The two sessions are intended to engage us within the narrative and allow us to raise questions to discuss what moves us to action.
Please sign up for the group in the lounge or by notifying the office by January 12th. The church will purchase the books at a cost of $17 each.
