mark_headshot_100Mark Diters, Minister

Our minister, the Rev. Mark Diters, was called in 2008 after a national search. However he is locally born and raised. He served as Associate Minister at the South Congregational Church of Granby, Connecticut from 2008 until 2008. Mark received his Bachelor’s Degree from Bates College and after graduate study at Princeton Theological School and Hartford Seminary, Mark finally received his Master of Divinity from Yale University. Mark lives in Canton with his wife Susan. They have three grown children and four ‘not so grown’, grand children.

Mark is active in mission work including hands on service as well as engaging transformative systemic change. He is the current president of the Board of the Christian Activities Council in Hartford, and his hands on efforts include volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, Rebuild Hartford, and summer mission trips to impoverished areas near and far.

Rebecca Calissi, Director of Music

Rebecca McNair Calissi joined the Flagg Road UCC community as Music Director in 2014. She previously served as Music Director at First United Methodist Church in Liberty, North Carolina from 2005 to 2006. Rebecca received her undergraduate degree in Piano Performance and Voice from Huntingdon College and a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In addition to her extensive experience as a vocalist, Rebecca is also a sought after accompanist, and has performed with music ensembles throughout the Southeast and New England regions. Rebecca is an Instructor of Music at Eastern Connecticut State University and maintains a private piano studio in South Windsor. Along with her husband, Jeff Calissi, she performs in the marimba and piano chamber group Una Duo.

At Flagg Road UCC, Rebecca is responsible for coordinating all the music for each service, conducting the choir, inviting guest musicians to perform, and providing solo music and accompaniment on organ and piano.  The music at Flagg Road ranges from traditional works by Buxtehude and Bach to contemporary service music by composers such as Mark Hayes. Our varied approach to music provides “something for everyone” and allows all people to feel welcome. Soli Deo Gloria!

Liz Halsey, Youth Group Leader

As Co-Youth Group Leader with Linda Wright, I am in the rewarding position to help guide a phenomenal group of teens in their pursuit of community service. Our outreach spans from organizing activities within our own church community, to working in soup kitchens in the Hartford area, to as far as Kentucky, the Jersey Shore, and Mississippi to help rebuild homes for our neediest citizens. I look forward to continued camaraderie within our small, but dynamic church community.

Linda Wright, Youth Goup Leader

As one of the Youth Group Leaders, I help to coordinate monthly activities for the kids in grades 6-12. We enjoy providing community service in places such as soup kitchens, childcare, and senior housing, and participate in annual mission trips and Rebuild Together Hartford. We also have our share of fun with annual sleepovers, crafts, and pizza & movie nights.
